Rayagada Railway Division to Launch June 1 Under ECoR Odisha

Rayagada Railway Division to Become Operational from June 1

In a major boost to railway infrastructure in Odisha, Indian Railways has announced the operational launch of a new railway division in Rayagada under the East Coast Railway (ECoR) zone. The division will become functional from June 1, 2026, covering a total rail network of nearly 696 km.

Railway officials confirmed that the Rayagada division will be officially notified and operationalised on the same day.

Aligned with South Coast Railway Zone Launch

The announcement comes shortly after Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw declared that the South Coast Railway (SCoR) zone, headquartered in Visakhapatnam, will also be notified on June 1, 2026.

The SCoR zone will become the 18th railway zone in India and will include the Waltair division, which is currently under the East Coast Railway.

Sources indicated that the Rayagada division will be launched in coordination with this major restructuring.

Extensive Rail Network Under Rayagada Division

The newly formed division will oversee a significant rail network across Odisha and adjoining regions.

Key Rail Sections Included:

  • 164 km: Koraput – Singapur Road
  • 36 km: Therubali – Koneru
  • 442 km: Kothavalasa – Kirandul (KK Line)
  • 53.5 km: Paralakhemundi – Gunpur

The total network spans approximately 695–696 km, making it a strategically important division.

Focus on Regional Growth and Connectivity

The foundation stone for the Rayagada railway division building was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 6, 2026.

The new division is expected to:

  • Strengthen railway infrastructure in southern Odisha
  • Improve connectivity in tribal-dominated regions
  • Boost economic activity and regional development
  • Generate new employment opportunities

Officials highlighted that the division will play a key role in developing Rayagada as a regional growth hub.

Clarification on KK Line Jurisdiction

Earlier concerns were raised regarding the merger of the Palasa–Ichchapuram section with the South Coast Railway zone.

However, authorities clarified that the high-revenue Kothavalasa–Kirandul (KK) line will remain under the jurisdiction of the Rayagada division.

Modern Infrastructure and Project Status

The Rayagada division is being developed at an estimated cost of ₹107 crore.

Infrastructure Highlights:

  • Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) office
  • Divisional control office
  • Staff residential facilities

Most of the civil construction work has been completed, while staff quarters are currently under development.

Railway officials also confirmed that 6–7 senior-level officers, including the DRM, have already been posted to the division.

Conclusion

The launch of the Rayagada railway division marks a significant step in strengthening Odisha’s railway network. With improved infrastructure, better connectivity, and economic opportunities, the division is expected to transform transportation and regional growth in southern Odisha.
