Western Odisha is bracing for another spell of intense rainfall, with the regional weather office warning of heavy to very heavy rain in several districts. Bargarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda and Sundargarh are among the areas identified for heightened weather attention.
The warning comes as an active weather system continues to influence rainfall over Odisha. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said a low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining areas of Jharkhand and north Odisha was expected to move northwestwards, supporting continued rain activity.
Heavy Rain Forecast for Western Odisha
The six western districts named in the alert could see periods of heavy to very heavy rainfall, increasing the possibility of waterlogging and difficult travel conditions in areas that receive intense downpours.
The weather warning is particularly significant for Bargarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda and Sundargarh, where rainfall has already been substantial during the current spell. On August 24, the IMD reported more than 100 mm of rainfall at several locations across Odisha, including 120 mm at Paikmal in Bargarh district.
The state government has also been monitoring the rainfall and flood situation through the State Emergency Operation Centre. A government situation report on August 24 said heavy to very heavy rainfall was likely at one or two places in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Subarnapur and Boudh.
Yellow Warning Keeps Several Districts on Alert
A Yellow Warning has also been issued for several districts of Odisha, indicating that residents and local authorities should remain alert to weather developments.
The latest IMD warning page for Odisha lists heavy-rain activity for August 25 and forecasts further periods of heavy or very heavy rainfall on subsequent days.
The rainfall situation is linked to the broader low-pressure system affecting eastern India. According to the IMD’s Bhubaneswar centre, the system was positioned over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining areas of Jharkhand and north Odisha on August 24 and was expected to move northwestwards.
Rain May Disrupt Normal Movement
Intense rainfall can create problems for commuters, particularly in low-lying areas and locations prone to waterlogging. People travelling through affected districts are advised to remain aware of changing local weather conditions and follow advisories issued by local authorities.
Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds have also accompanied the ongoing weather activity in parts of Odisha.
The rainfall comes after significant downpours across the state. The IMD reported that eight locations recorded more than 100 mm of rain in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on August 24, highlighting the intensity of the current monsoon spell.
