Udala, Mayurbhanj: Large piles of garbage have reportedly accumulated along roads and around a waste-processing facility in Udala NAC, raising concerns over the management and disposal of solid waste in the area.
The Udala NAC garbage situation has drawn attention because a system for processing and disposing of waste is already in place. However, according to the supplied report, the facility itself is now surrounded and overwhelmed by accumulated waste.
The garbage can reportedly be seen in large quantities across parts of the area, with waste heaps extending towards roads. The situation has created a visible waste-management problem for the local area.
Waste-processing facility overwhelmed by garbage
The waste-processing system is intended to handle the garbage collected from the urban area. Official records submitted to the National Green Tribunal have previously listed Udala NAC among Odisha’s urban local bodies with established waste-processing facilities.
A government report recorded a processing facility capacity of 15 tonnes per day for Udala NAC, comprising 5 tonnes per day for a Material Composting Centre and 10 tonnes per day for a Material Recovery Facility. The same report recorded 4.51 tonnes per day of wet and dry waste being processed at the time covered by that assessment.
Another government submission said waste from Udala NAC was being handled through different streams, including composting, recovery of recyclable materials and sending refuse-derived fuel to cement factories.
Despite the existing system, the current situation described in the supplied report points to a significant accumulation of garbage at the facility.
Garbage accumulation raises waste-management questions
The immediate concern is the growing volume of waste and whether the available processing arrangements are able to handle the accumulation effectively.
When garbage remains piled up for an extended period, it can affect the cleanliness of surrounding areas and create difficulties for people living or travelling nearby. The supplied report specifically highlights the extent to which garbage has accumulated around the processing centre.
The issue also puts attention on the importance of regular collection, transportation, segregation and processing of municipal waste.
Udala’s existing waste-management infrastructure
Udala NAC, located in Mayurbhanj district, has previously been documented as having infrastructure for processing municipal waste. A government report submitted before the National Green Tribunal recorded separate facilities for composting and material recovery.
The same government records indicate that Udala’s waste-management system was designed to process collected waste rather than allow it to remain untreated.
The latest situation described in the supplied report, however, highlights the gap between having waste-processing infrastructure and keeping the system clear and operational on the ground.
Udala NAC garbage issue needs attention
The accumulation of garbage in Udala NAC has brought the local waste-management system into focus. With large quantities of waste reportedly piling up near roads and the processing facility, effective handling and timely processing remain important for maintaining cleanliness in the area.
The Udala NAC garbage issue is therefore not only about the visible waste heaps but also about how efficiently the existing waste-processing system is being managed and maintained.
