Heavy rain and waterlogging in Odisha amid deep depression
Heavy rain and strong winds continue to affect several parts of Odisha after the deep depression crossed the coast.

Odisha Rain Alert: Heavy Rain, Waterlogging and Road Disruptions Continue

The Odisha rain alert remains in place as heavy rainfall continues across several parts of the state under the influence of a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal. The system crossed the coast near Kalingapatnam, between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur, at around 11:30 pm on September 23, with the landfall process continuing for nearly three hours.

The system was moving at around 7 kmph and had maximum wind speeds of 55–65 kmph. Even after crossing the coast, its effects continue to be felt across coastal and adjoining areas, with heavy rain, gusty winds and rough sea conditions reported.

The system is expected to move northwestwards for around eight hours and gradually weaken over the following 24 hours. However, rainfall activity is expected to continue across Odisha, with the weather department warning of heavy rain over the next two days.

Red Warning Issued for Nabarangpur

Under the ongoing Odisha rain alert, Nabarangpur has been placed under a red warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall. Six districts are under an orange warning, while nine districts have received a yellow warning for heavy rainfall.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall has been forecast in several parts of the state, including areas of southern, western and northern Odisha. The continued rainfall has already affected road connectivity and created waterlogging in several districts.

Malkangiri Faces Waterlogging and Road Disruptions

Malkangiri has experienced continuous rainfall over the past two days, resulting in waterlogging and rising water levels in rivers and streams.

Around three feet of water is flowing over the Kankarkonda bridge on National Highway 326. The situation has affected traffic movement on the highway and brought vehicle movement to a halt in the affected stretch.

Water is also flowing over the Kanyashram bridge on the Kalimela-Padia road, while bridges near Pangam and Pateru have also been affected. Movement between Malkangiri and Kalimela, as well as Kalimela and Padia, has been disrupted amid the persistent rainfall.

The rising water levels have increased concerns over road connectivity in parts of the district as rain continues.

Fallen Tree Disrupts Jatani-Pipili Road

Heavy rain and strong winds also disrupted traffic on the Jatani-Pipili main road near Pallavi School in Mathasahi.

A large tree fell across the road, leaving vehicles stranded on both sides for around two hours. Fire personnel reached the location, removed the fallen tree and restored normal traffic movement.

The incident highlights the local impact of the strong winds accompanying the ongoing weather system.

Southern Odisha Records Heavy Rainfall

Several locations have recorded substantial rainfall during the ongoing weather spell. Semiliguda in Koraput recorded the highest rainfall in Odisha over the past 24 hours at 193.3 mm.

Chitrakonda recorded 168.8 mm, while Tangi received 142 mm and G. Udayagiri recorded 125.4 mm during the same period.

Semiliguda also recorded 421 mm of rainfall over the past 48 hours, reflecting the intensity of the continuing rain in parts of the state.

Fishing Boats Take Shelter at Paradip

Rough sea conditions have also affected fishing activity along the coast. As the sea remained unsafe for their return to Andhra Pradesh, 36 fishing boats carrying 319 fishermen took shelter at Paradip Port.

Initially, 28 boats reached the port, followed by another eight. The boats are expected to leave once sea conditions improve.

Another trawler from Andhra Pradesh also took shelter at Paradip Fishing Harbour after developing an engine problem.

With the deep depression continuing to influence weather conditions, heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected to remain a concern across several parts of Odisha.

The Odisha rain alert remains important as the state faces another two days of heavy rainfall, with warnings in place across multiple districts and disruptions already reported in roads, bridges and coastal areas.
