Odisha Floods: Cyclone Arnab Batters Ganjam, Gajapati

The Odisha floods triggered by torrential rain associated with Cyclone Arnab have severely disrupted normal life across Ganjam and Gajapati districts. Floodwater has entered residential areas, rivers have risen, and landslides have blocked roads, leaving several villages struggling with disrupted transport and access to essential services.

Continuous rainfall has inundated low-lying areas, damaged road infrastructure and submerged agricultural land. In some locations, water has entered houses, forcing residents to deal with damaged household belongings and rising floodwater around their homes. Reports from the affected districts also describe people stranded by flooding and an ambulance caught in floodwater in Adapada under Sanakhemundi block.

The situation has raised concerns about rescue operations, road connectivity and the safety of residents in vulnerable areas.

Ganjam Floods: Homes, Roads and Farmland Submerged

Ganjam district has experienced widespread flooding following several days of heavy rain. Sorada has been among the affected areas, with rising water levels in the Rushikulya River contributing to flooding in residential neighbourhoods.

Areas including Adarsha Colony, Matha Sahi and Kali Mandir Sahi in Sorada have reportedly been inundated. Residents in affected localities have faced difficulties as floodwater entered homes and spread across roads and surrounding settlements.

The Ghodahada River has also risen, affecting villages and transport routes. Floodwater has inundated agricultural fields, while waterlogged roads have disrupted everyday movement in several parts of the district.

Other affected locations include Dharakote, Sanakhemundi, Digapahandi, Patrapur and areas around Berhampur. The extent of flooding varies across locations, but the combination of persistent rainfall and rising rivers has increased pressure on vulnerable communities.

Landslides Disrupt Connectivity in Gajapati

Gajapati district has faced additional challenges from landslides and damage to roads in its hilly areas. Continuous rainfall has loosened soil on slopes, allowing mud, rocks and debris to slide onto roadways.

Balibada Ghat Road has been blocked by landslide debris and fallen trees, disrupting road access to Balibada village and four nearby villages, according to the supplied incident details.

A separate landslide on the Kaipur–Gangaba route reportedly left soil and rocks spread across approximately 50 metres of road. The obstruction has affected movement along the route while rainfall continued.

Elsewhere in Gajapati, cyclone-related runoff has damaged sections of the Kaipur–Burukhata road, while the collapse of the Gundriguda bridge in Mohana block has added to the transport difficulties. Parts of National Highway 326 have also experienced flooding and disruption.

The damage highlights the vulnerability of hilly road networks during prolonged heavy rainfall, particularly where landslides or overflowing streams can quickly make routes impassable.

Ambulance Trapped as Floodwater Disrupts Movement

Flooding has also affected emergency movement in Ganjam. An ambulance became trapped in floodwater at Adapada under Sanakhemundi block, highlighting the challenges faced by emergency services when roads become submerged.

The incident underlines the importance of maintaining safe access for medical transport during flooding. Waterlogged roads can delay access to healthcare facilities and complicate efforts to reach people in isolated settlements.

Meanwhile, the possibility of evacuating people trapped by floodwater has added urgency to the response. Reports on October 29 indicated that authorities were coordinating efforts to arrange helicopter assistance for people stranded in affected areas, with an initial plan to airlift around 120 people from four locations in Dharakote. Rescue teams were also working to reach affected communities.

Heavy Rainfall Raises River and Flood Concerns

The rainfall associated with Cyclone Arnab has affected several parts of southern Odisha, including Ganjam, Gajapati and neighbouring districts.

According to rainfall figures reported by OMMCOM News on October 29, Patrapur in Ganjam recorded 546 mm of rain in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am. G. Udayagiri in Kandhamal recorded 462.4 mm, while Sanakhemundi received 388 mm and Sorada recorded 375 mm during the same period.

These figures illustrate the intensity of the rainfall in some of the worst-affected locations. Heavy precipitation in river catchment areas can increase runoff, raise river levels and intensify flooding downstream.

In Gajapati, rising water levels in rivers, including the Vamsadhara and Mahendratanaya, have added to concerns for communities near riverbanks and in low-lying areas. The Vamsadhara was reported above its danger mark at Kashinagar on the morning of October 29, according to Hindustan Times.

Gandahati Waterfall Swells After Heavy Rain

The heavy rainfall has also increased the flow of the Gandahati Waterfall in Gajapati district. The waterfall has appeared more powerful as water cascades down the rocky landscape with greater force.

Although the increased flow creates a dramatic natural spectacle, heavy rain in hilly areas can also make nearby terrain and access routes hazardous. Visitors should avoid approaching swollen waterfalls, fast-flowing streams and unstable slopes during periods of intense rainfall.

What Happens Next?

The immediate priorities in the affected districts include reaching people stranded by floodwater, restoring road connectivity where possible and monitoring rivers and vulnerable locations as rainfall conditions evolve.

Residents in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas should follow official advisories, avoid crossing flooded roads and bridges, and move to safer locations when instructed by local authorities. Water-covered roads can conceal damaged surfaces or strong currents, making them dangerous even when the depth appears manageable.

The full extent of the damage to homes, roads and agricultural land will become clearer as water levels change and assessment teams can access affected locations.

The Odisha floods linked to Cyclone Arnab have brought significant disruption to Ganjam and Gajapati, with inundated homes, swollen rivers, blocked roads and rescue challenges affecting communities. The focus remains on the safety of stranded residents, emergency access and recovery from the damage caused by persistent heavy rainfall.
