Around 70 students have allegedly fallen victim to a house rental scam in the Paikanagar area of Bhubaneswar, with the total amount involved estimated at nearly ₹5 lakh. The accused, a mother-son duo, reportedly collected money from students by promising to arrange rental accommodation.
According to reports, the accused collected amounts ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹26,000 from individual students. Students from Odisha as well as other states were allegedly targeted after being assured that rented rooms would be provided.
However, the students reportedly did not receive the promised accommodation despite making the payments. As concerns grew, the alleged fraud came to light, prompting action from the police.
Nayapalli Police reportedly arrested the mother and her son in connection with the case. Both accused were subsequently forwarded to court.
The incident has raised concerns among students seeking rental accommodation in Bhubaneswar, particularly those who move to the city from other parts of Odisha and outside the state for education.
The case highlights the need for students to verify property ownership, rental agreements and accommodation details before making advance payments. Further details about the investigation and possible recovery of the money are awaited.
