The Odisha flood situation has intensified across several districts as continuous rainfall in upper catchment areas pushes river levels higher. The Baitarani and Jalaka rivers have crossed their respective danger marks, while fresh inundation has been reported in low-lying areas.
The latest rise in the Baitarani has affected parts of Jajpur and Dasarathpur blocks, raising concerns among residents as floodwater moves downstream from the upper catchment.
The situation has also become more serious in Keonjhar district, where heavy rainfall has caused water levels in several rivers to rise. More than 150 people from vulnerable low-lying areas have reportedly been rescued since last night and moved to safer locations, including school buildings being used as shelters.
Baitarani crosses danger level at Akhuapada
The Baitarani River has been swelling steadily following continuous rainfall. At Akhuapada, the river crossed its danger level of 18.33 metres around midnight and was flowing at 19.20 metres by 5 AM, according to the information provided.
At Anandapur, the river was also flowing above the danger mark by 8 PM as water levels continued to rise. Several houses have reportedly been submerged, adding to concerns in flood-prone areas.
The latest flooding marks another spell of high water in the Baitarani, with the river reportedly witnessing its fourth flood.
200-foot breach reported in Kani River
A major breach measuring around 200 feet has developed in the Kani River. Large volumes of floodwater are reportedly rushing through the breach, creating a serious situation in nearby areas.
The fresh flow of water has added to concerns as residents in vulnerable locations face the possibility of further inundation.
Jalaka crosses danger mark in Basta
The flood situation has also worsened in Basta in Balasore district after the Jalaka River rose following rainfall associated with a low-pressure system.
At Mathani in Basta block, the river’s danger level is 6.50 metres, while its water level had reached 7.84 metres by 6 AM. With rainfall continuing in the upper catchment, the water level is expected to rise further.
More than three feet of water has accumulated inside the premises of Basta Police Station. Surrounding areas have also been inundated, affecting the movement of police personnel and their routine operations.
Rescue teams respond to rising water levels
With floodwaters affecting low-lying communities, rescue operations have been stepped up. More than 150 people have already been moved to safer locations since last night, according to the information provided.
Fire Services DG Sudhanshu Sarangi urged people trapped by floodwaters to seek immediate assistance. He said ensuring the safe rescue of people affected by flooding remains the top priority.
The combination of continued rainfall, rising river levels and downstream flow from upper catchments remains a concern for several districts.
As water continues to move downstream, authorities and residents are closely watching the Baitarani, Jalaka and other rivers. The Odisha flood situation could remain challenging in affected low-lying areas as rainfall continues.
