Odisha Seeks UNESCO Heritage Status for Puri Rath Yatra

The Odisha government has taken a significant step towards securing global recognition for the Puri Rath Yatra UNESCO Heritage Status. Chief Minister Mohan Majhi has written to the Union Culture Minister requesting support for the inclusion of the world-famous festival in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

According to the Chief Minister, the recognition would strengthen the international identity of the centuries-old festival and highlight its cultural and spiritual importance before a global audience.

Proposal Already Submitted

In his communication, Mohan Majhi stated that the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has already completed and submitted the required documentation for UNESCO’s consideration. The state government has requested the Centre to extend its support so that the nomination process can move forward.

The proposal is aimed at showcasing the unique traditions associated with the annual Rath Yatra, one of India’s most widely celebrated religious festivals.

Festival Reflects Universal Human Values

The Chief Minister described the Puri Rath Yatra as much more than a religious celebration. He said the festival represents timeless values of world brotherhood, inclusiveness and humanity that continue to inspire millions of devotees and visitors every year.

The annual chariot festival attracts pilgrims from across India and many other countries, making it one of Odisha’s most recognised cultural events on the global stage.

Global Recognition Could Strengthen Cultural Identity

If the festival is included in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, it would receive international recognition for preserving a living cultural tradition. Such recognition often helps promote awareness of cultural practices while encouraging their preservation for future generations.

The Odisha government believes the recognition would further elevate the global profile of the Puri Rath Yatra and reinforce its importance as a symbol of India’s rich cultural heritage.

The proposal for Puri Rath Yatra UNESCO Heritage Status now awaits further progress through the nomination process with support from the Union government.
