The Mahanadi River Water Level has begun rising after floodwater was released from the Hirakud Reservoir in Odisha through 10 sluice gates. The increase in downstream water levels follows the season’s first floodwater discharge from the reservoir, prompting authorities to closely monitor the river’s flow.
According to the available information, floodwater continues to be released from the reservoir as part of water management operations. Officials are keeping a close watch on the situation as the discharge affects the Mahanadi River downstream.
Water Discharge Increased to 10 Gates
The controlled release of floodwater started on the previous day when four sluice gates of the Hirakud Reservoir were opened. Later, six additional gates were opened, taking the total number of operational gates to 10.
At present, seven gates on the left spillway and three gates on the right spillway are releasing water into the Mahanadi River.
The gradual increase in water discharge is aimed at managing reservoir inflow during the active monsoon period while maintaining safe storage levels.

The release of water has resulted in a noticeable rise in the Mahanadi River’s water level downstream. Authorities are continuously monitoring river conditions to assess the impact of the increased discharge.
