Bhubaneswar: Nandankanan Zoological Park marked World Elephant Day with a special feast for its elephants, offering them a selection of fresh fruits and vegetables as part of the occasion.
The elephants were treated to sugarcane, bananas, coconuts and papayas. The special feeding activity brought attention to the importance of elephants and their place in Odisha’s natural and cultural landscape.
Gajaraj Holds a Special Place in Odisha
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi extended greetings on World Elephant Day and highlighted the elephant’s importance to the state’s identity.
In his message, the Chief Minister described elephants, popularly referred to as Gajaraj, as a distinctive symbol of Odisha’s natural environment and rich cultural heritage. The elephant has long been closely associated with the state’s forests, rivers, hills and other natural surroundings.
The occasion also drew attention to the challenges facing elephants beyond zoological parks and protected areas.
Human-Elephant Conflict Remains a Concern
Elephants are increasingly moving out of forest areas and entering human settlements in search of food and water. This movement has contributed to growing concerns over human-elephant conflict in areas where elephant habitats and human activity overlap.
The shrinking availability of safe forest habitats and traditional elephant movement corridors has made the situation more challenging. At the same time, expanding human settlements are bringing people and elephants into closer contact.
These pressures underline the importance of protecting natural habitats and maintaining safe movement routes for elephants.
For Odisha, the issue carries particular significance because of the deep connection between elephants and the state’s forests and cultural heritage. Protecting the animals therefore involves not only conserving wildlife but also safeguarding the natural landscapes on which they depend.

The World Elephant Day observance at Nandankanan offered a lighter and more celebratory way to focus public attention on elephants. The special meal featuring fruits and vegetables provided the zoo’s elephants with a different feeding experience while marking the occasion.
