Puri Conducts Mock Rescue Drill Ahead of Rath Yatra to Strengthen Emergency Preparedness

With the annual Rath Yatra drawing thousands of devotees and tourists to Puri, authorities have stepped up preparations by conducting a Puri mock rescue drill at the city’s beach and a separate emergency response exercise on Bada Danda. The drills are aimed at improving coordination among rescue teams and ensuring a quick response during emergencies throughout the festival.

At Puri Beach, members of the Lifeguard Association carried out a mock rescue operation demonstrating how drowning victims can be rescued safely and efficiently. The exercise also included first aid demonstrations and emergency response procedures designed to prepare lifeguards for challenging situations that may arise during the festive season.

Lifeguards Spread Beach Safety Awareness

Apart from rescue demonstrations, lifeguards interacted with beach visitors to raise awareness about water safety. Tourists were informed about the risks posed by rip currents and advised to follow safety instructions while entering the sea.

The awareness campaign is intended to reduce accidents by encouraging visitors to remain alert, stay within designated safe zones, and seek assistance from lifeguards whenever necessary.

Fire Services Conduct Emergency Drill on Bada Danda

In another preparedness exercise, the Fire Services Department organized a large-scale mock drill on Puri’s Bada Danda, the main ceremonial road used during the Rath Yatra procession.

The drill focused on testing the readiness of emergency response teams to handle unexpected situations during one of Odisha’s largest religious gatherings. Personnel practiced coordinated emergency response procedures to improve preparedness and ensure that different teams can work together effectively if an incident occurs.

Focus on Safety During the Festival

Every year, Rath Yatra attracts massive crowds to Puri, making emergency planning an essential part of festival management. The mock drills are part of broader efforts to strengthen public safety and enhance the readiness of rescue and emergency personnel before the event begins.

Authorities continue to emphasize preventive measures alongside emergency response training, with beach safety awareness and disaster preparedness remaining key priorities for ensuring a safe festival for devotees and tourists alike.

As Rath Yatra approaches, the Puri mock rescue drill and coordinated emergency exercises reflect ongoing efforts to improve preparedness and promote a secure environment across the city.
